What is PLA? Why is it a good alternative?

PLA is a lactic acid polymer produced from a natural, renewable resource (starchy corn). When it decomposes, it does not harm the environment because biomass, water and carbon dioxide are produced. A research group managed to reduce the degradation time of PLA to 1 month. Thanks to the technology, the amount of carbon dioxide released is reduced to almost zero.

What does innovation mean from a social point of view?

Current research and developments are limited to optimizing the production of bioplastics. There are no significant movements in research to develop a system that facilitates the effective breakdown of the plastic waste generated.
